I\u2019ve heard that dental sedation<\/a>\ncan make you sick. I\u2019ve never had a reaction to any kind of medication, but I\u2019m\nworried. Obviously, I don\u2019t want to throw up at the dental office, but what I\u2019m\nreally concerned about is what happens when I go home. Is there a real risk of\nvomiting and choking while I\u2019m still drowsy at home, or am I just overly\nanxious?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It might help you to have a better\nunderstanding of how sedation dentistry works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Varying\nLevels of Dental Sedation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n
\n
\"Head-to-waist<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Nitrous oxide.<\/strong> You\u2019ve probably heard it referred to as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is the lowest level of sedation. It is fast-acting, administered in the office, and wears off quickly. It works well for anxious patients<\/a> and gives you a sense of well-being. Research shows<\/a> that after receiving nitrous oxide for a medical procedure, nausea is not a concern for most patients. The risk of nausea increases with longer procedures. But dental-office procedures are usually short, so you will be less likely to have an issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good news is that nitrous oxide\nwears off before you leave the office, so you won\u2019t be drowsy when you leave\nthe dental office. To minimize the chances of feeling nauseous, avoid eating a\nlarge meal before your appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oral conscious sedation.<\/strong> Your dentist will give you oral medication to take in\nadvance of your dental appointment. Oral conscious sedation is often used along\nwith nitrous oxide. The types of medication that dentists prescribe vary, from\nsedatives to anti-anxiety medication and even antihistamines. Your dentist will\nlikely have a list of preferred medications to help patients relax. Nausea is a\npotential side-effect with many medications. You will likely be advised not to\neat after midnight before your appointment. Your dentist will also recommend\nthat you have an adult with you for the rest of the day as the medication wears\noff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

IV sedation.<\/strong> This highest level of sedation has similar side-effects as\noral conscious sedation. It provides a deeper state of relaxation, but unlike\ngeneral anesthesia, you will still be conscious. You will need to arrange for\ntransportation to and from your dental appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minimizing\nthe Risk of Nausea<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t have a history of nausea\nwith medications, you probably won\u2019t have any issues with dental sedation. It\nis also worth noting that most cases of nausea don\u2019t result in vomiting. You\ncan minimize the risk by following instructions on whether or not you can eat\nbefore. You can speak with your dentist about your concerns, and he or she will\nexplain what you can expect before, during, and after your dental procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
